Land development plan gets approval

A land development plan that calls for constructing a new magistrate's office and police station in the borough of Weatherly got the green light from county officials.

During the Carbon County Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday, the board recommended conditional plan approval for the project.Ivan O. Meixell, county planner, said that the plans include the construction of a 3,250-square-foot district magistrate's office, a 6,240-square-foot police station, parking area and associated storm water controls on the former Federal Mogul industrial complex near the intersection of Plane and West Main streets. Other proposed buildings on the site that were not included in this plan review are a borough building and library. The project to build a municipal complex has been in the works since 2011 after borough officials asked for help from state and federal legislators in securing funding for a new police station.According to an article previously published in the Times News, the current police station, located in a part of the former Weatherly Train Station, has two rooms totaling 258 square feet of space. One room is the department's main office and criminal holding area, while the second serves as the evidence locker, lunchroom, locker room and storage facility. The borough offices are also in the train station. In other matters, the commission acted on the following items:• Joseph J. and Debra Kay Bennett received conditional plan approval for a proposed subdivision/lot line revision at 557/569 Delaware Ave., Palmerton. The Bennetts also received conditional plan rejection for a revised building renovation and addition on Delaware Avenue, which had originally been reviewed in September 2013.Renovations completed in November 2013 created a building encroachment onto an adjoining property, which required the aforementioned lot line revision.Meixell outlined a number of issues with the revised plan, and the board stipulated that if the Bennetts cannot adequately mitigate the problems, the conditional plan rejection will become a plan rejection.• Donald H. Dorward Sr. received conditional plan rejection for a revised subdivision plan near the intersection of Rock Street in Franklin Township. It was noted that the plan does not conform to final plan or subdivision design criteria of the Franklin Township Land Development Ordinances.
