2013-14 TIMES NEWS wrestling all-star team unveiled

One thing is clear when looking at the 2013-14 edition of the TIMES NEWS All-Star Team - parity reigned supreme throughout the area this season.

Seven TN area teams placed wrestlers on the first team, with several earning multiple selections.Palmerton had one state qualifier in Josh Evans, who was making his second appearance after qualifying as a sophomore in 2012. Evans certainly made the most of his second chance, claiming a hard fought fifth-place finish. After earning a trip to Hershey a year ago, Zachary Graver failed to duplicate his performance but was able to advance to the Southeast Regional tournament. Teammate Zack Christman was injured before the district tournament, but the junior turned in an impressive campaign prior to that.Panther Valley produced three state qualifiers in Lenny Ogozalek, Richard Nase and Rian Shubeck, with Nase earning an eighth-place medal. All made their first trip to Hershey, and Shubeck will no doubt look to return as a senior and take a spot on the podium.Pleasant Valley did not have any state qualifiers, but the Bears' Ahmad Curtis and Brody Keefe showed tremendous progress in advancing to the 3A regional tournament. Standout Kenny Yanovich, a state qualifier a year ago, was unable to participate in the postseason after suffering a shoulder injury late in the season. After qualifying as a sophomore in 2012, Tamaqua's Colin Mashack made a return trip to Hershey this season. Unfortunately, the senior was unable to repeat his podium finish from two years ago. But his success this season was undeniable, as evidenced by his numerous accomplishments throughout the season. Teammate Dylan Rynkiewicz didn't advance to states, but the junior had a tremendous season and finished it with a spot in the 2A Southeast Regional tournament. After showing a great deal of progress this season, the sky's the limit for Rynkiewicz next year.Jim Thorpe's Kevan Gentile also showed impressive growth in his sophomore year, falling just short of a trip to Hershey. If this season is any indication of what's ahead, Gentile will almost certainly be a contender next season with a good chance of challenging some of the top wrestlers in the state when the calendar turns to March.Like many others on this list, Lehighton's Connor Frey also showed marked improvement this season. The sophomore bettered his position at the regional tournament and qualified for states. While he didn't medal, Frey was competitive in all of his contests and never looked overmatched against high-quality opponents. Frey's success as a sophomore should give him confidence moving forward.Despite missing some time with injuries, Northwestern's Quentin Bernhard turned it on when it mattered most late in the season. The sophomore wrestled several tough matches in the district and regional tournaments, narrowly missing a trip to states. There's no doubt that Bernhard will be one-to-watch next year as the Tigers return several young, talented wrestlers. With the number of state qualifiers increasing from four to six this past season, the future certainly looks bright for wrestling in the area. Seven make return appearances on the first team this year, and three move from the second team last season to the first team this time around. The 14 selections (based on the number of weight classes but coming from any weight class) follow below with highlights from their season. The wrestlers combined for a 432-112 record, with eight reaching the 30-win plateau and one surpassing 40-wins. He's not afraid to initiate action and try something big to put guys on their back. He's just so confident in his style and believes he is going to come out on top. He's so dangerous it teaches the other guys to never stop wrestling through positions," Palmerton head coach Dave Lavin.Ahmad Curtis, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (21-10)-Won five straight matches at the AAA District-11 tournament to claim third place-Advanced to Northeast Regional, where he was able to pick up a win-Second team Mountain Valley Conference selectionAnother take: "Ahmad's finish at districts this year has been a great asset to our team. He grew a lot this year and did an outstanding job adjusting his style to wrestle bigger guys. He is a student of the sport and really studies techniques and is always looking to improve. He is so slick that guys have to always focus; if they relax for a split second he can score," Dave Lavin.Connor Frey, Lehighton, So. (35-10)-Fourth in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic-Third in 2A District 11 tournament-Fourth at Southeast Regional-Finished 1-2 at PIAA Championships-Second team Mountain Valley Conference selection-Second straight appearance as TN first team all starAnother take: "I think Connor had a stand out year and put himself on track for an incredible amount of success coming up in his junior and senior years. Making the state tournament and winning a match out there as a sophomore was an incredible achievement and was very valuable in providing him with the experience that will help him get on the podium over the next two years. I know that he's going to put in the offseason work to make sure he gets there as well," Lehighton head coach Dan Williams.Kevan Gentile, Jim Thorpe, So. (36-8)-Third at Schuylkill League tournament-Fourth at AA District 11 tournament-Sixth at Southeast Regional tournamentAnother take: "Kevan had a great season and showed exactly what we are looking for in our athletes, which is continual growth. I've always believed that there is a "switch" that an athlete turns on in sports and typically it occurs sometime during their sophomore year. Kevan turned that "switch" on from day one this past season. As a staff and a program, we were not surprised to see him do as well as he did since he trains all year long. I expect great things from him next year, especially with how well his peers did from District 11 out at states in the 106 pound weight class," Jim Thorpe head coach Shawn Albert.Zachary Graver, Palmerton, Jr. (26-4)-Third at AA District-11 tournament-Southeast Regional qualifier-Second team Colonial League all star-Second consecutive selection as TN first team all starAnother take: "He is really strong and physical and just smothers his opponents. Guys can't handle the type of pressure he brings for six minutes, which is why he has so many dominating wins. He puts so much time and effort into the sport year-round and I guarantee he's going to come back even better next year. He is so strong and well positioned that other guys have to work a ton of setups and incorporate a lot of motion to score on him," Dave Lavin.Brody Keefe, Pleasant Valley, Jr. (29-14)-Third at 3A District 11 tournament-Northeast Regional Qualifier-Second team Mountain Valley Conference all starAnother take: "Brody has been one of those kids that always would come out on top. He has a great personality that fits him and our team well. He has two years left and I think he will improve on his great season this year," Justin Micklos.Colin Mashack, Tamaqua, Sr. (35-7)-Third at the AA District 11 tournament-Fourth at Southeast Regional-PIAA qualifier-Finished with a career record of 123-23-Schuylkill League Champion and Most Outstanding Wrestler-Third consecutive selection as TN all starAnother take: "Although he fell short of his goal to bring home a medal, it was both enjoyable and a relief to see him return to States after struggling through four significant injuries between the end of his junior season and the opening tournament of his senior season. I will miss having his level of talent and understanding of wrestling in our mat room," Tamaqua head coach Jon Mashack.Richard Nase, Panther Valley, Sr. (33-10)-Second in Schuylkill League tournament-Third at the 2A District 11 Tournament-Fourth at Southeast Regional tournament-Eighth-place at the PIAA Championships-Second straight appearance as TN first team all star-Will attend Shippensburg University where he will play footballAnother take: "He is probably the best athlete to come through Panther Valley in my 22 years here. I have seen stronger kids, faster kids, bigger kids, but he is a freak athlete. His hips are unbelievable. He cut weight to make our team stronger for the last three years. I won't say he never complained about it, but he did it every time. He holds a place in my heart because of some of the hardships he had to endure, but he has come out of them shining and working harder," Panther Valley head coach Tim Robb.Lenny Ogozalek, Panther Valley, Sr. (42-8)-Third in Schuylkill League tournament-Third at the 2A District-11 tournament-Third at Southeast Regional tournament-PIAA state qualifier-Second all-time in wins at Panther Valley-Will attend Gettysburg College where he will also wrestle-PV's scholar-athlete and is ranked third in his classAnother take: "Lenny is and unbelievable leader and a quiet kid that leads by example. He wrestled up a weight or two during the regular season. But he was a team guy that never, ever complained and was an absolute pleasure to coach. He never misses a day, works as hard as anyone in the state and cares about everyone. He is what Panther Valley wrestling should strive to be," Tim Robb.Dylan Rynkiewicz, Tamaqua, Jr. (35-6)-Reached the finals at Bloomsburg's DKI Invitational.-Schuylkill League Champion-Third at 2A District-11 tournament-Picked up a first round consolation win over Hamburg's Chris Kemmerer, who was ranked in the top-10 in the state, at Southeast Regional-TN second team all star last yearAnother take: "Dylan showed an impressive amount of improvement this season. He is maturing as a wrestler and showed that on the mat. Dylan showed steady improvement throughout the season and became dominant from the top position by the end. He should be a contender for a state medal next season if he continues to work hard through the off season," Jon Mashack.Rian Shubeck, Panther Valley, Jr. (33-10)-Second in Schuylkill League tournament-Third at AA District 11 tournament-Fourth at Southeast Regional tournament-PIAA state qualifier-Second straight TN first team selectionAnother take: "Not flashy, he's just intense and only goes forward. He likes to break kids down physically and mentally. I will take Rian in overtime matches and in tight matches. He's very athletic and very confident in his abilities. The drop from heavyweight to 220 made him very strong for the weight class. He is a quiet leader as well. His success has been a result of his work ethic," Tim Robb.Kenny Yanovich, Pleasant Valley, Sr. (26-3)-Fourth in the Bethlehem Holiday Classic-Fourth consecutive TN all star selection-Tied Pleasant Valley's all time wins record with 138-Set the PV record for most pins in a career with 78-First team Mountain Valley Conference all starAnother take: "Kenny is a kid that every coach wishes could be on his team.
