Nesquehoning will seat new mayor

Nesquehoning residents will have a new mayor in 2014.

Sam Kitchko, who ran on the Independent ticket, defeated incumbent K. Tony Walck and Republican candidate Michael Frey during Tuesday's municipal election. Kitchko secured 68.4 percent of the votes; while Walck received 23.58 percent and Frey, 7.53 percent.When reached by telephone this morning, Kitchko said he was relieved and glad."I want to thank my wife, family and dear friends who helped me with my campaign," he said. "I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support that I received this election. I'm looking forward to working collectively with borough council and the police department."I will not only serve those who voted for me, but will work for every resident in Nesquehoning and I will work my hardest to keep Nesquehoning moving forward."Kitchko said that he hopes to address some items he spoke with residents about during his campaign, including creating more recreational things for the children, fixing up the parks and adding equipment; and working with the police department to make the town safer for the residents.Kitchko is a lifelong resident of Nesquehoning. He and his wife, Michele, have been married for 38 years. They have two children, Samantha, who is married to Lt. Cmdr. Nino Logan, of Florida; and Michael, who is married to Sausanie, of Feasterville, Pa. They also have three grandchildren, Xander, Vance and Bennett.He is a current member of the Nesquehoning Planning Commission and the secretary/treasurer of the Nesquehoning Conservation Club.
