In a 6-0 vote on Thursday night, the Pleasant Valley School Board voted to decline an invitation for their sports programs to join the Colonial League .
In a prepared statement, Pleasant Valley School District superintendent Dr. Douglas Arnold read "The Board's decision was made after careful consideration and deliberation; but it was determined that remaining in the Mountain Valley Conference is in the best interest of our student-participaton. The Colonial League is a well-respected, competitive league and we sincerely appreciate being considered for membership in such a league. Naturally, we wish the Colonial League much success in the future."
Board members Michelle Palmer, Charles Hoffman and Harvey Frable were absent.
Dr. Arnold later said that the MVC is a great conference and the district has a long history with them.
Pleasant Valley is joined in the Mountain Valley Conference by East Stroudsburg South, East Stroudsburg North, Pocono Mountain East, Pocono Mountain West, Stroudsburg and Lehighton. Lehighton, which like Pleasant Valley has received an invitation from the Colonial League, had already announced it will be leaving the MVC in 2014 to join the Schuylkill League and Anthracite Football League.
Pleasant Valley board member Russ Gould, and others, would like to see the school become a member of the Lehigh Valley Conference.
"We're a large school and I'd like to see us compete with the other large schools that are in the LVC," he said after the April 8 Buildings and Grounds meeting.
The Lehigh Valley Conference has 12 high schools in its league. Members come from Lehigh and Northampton counties.
