Tamaqua wildcat sewer work continues...

ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS Tamaqua Fire Police detoured traffic for about 12 hours over the weekend while contractors and Tamaqua borough employees spent time digging up the 300 block of East Broad Street in Tamaqua recently to connect a home's sewer line to the borough's main sewer line. The illegal sewers became a controversial issue after the borough received a mandate in December of 2010 from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. DEP ordered borough leaders to identify any property illegally discharging waste into the Wabash River or Panther Creek, then have those buildings connect to the borough's sewer line by Aug. 3, 2011. "Over two dozen homes are still discharging waste into the river, and have yet to be connected to Tamaqua's main sewer line," said Rob Jones, Tamaqua Public Works Director. Fire Police volunteers Sgt. Jack Bowman, left, and Lt. Brent Confer direct traffic on SR209 around the work site.
