Kidder Township resident turns 100 years young

Gustave "Gus" Lengle is 100 years young today. Born on July 24, 1912 in Irvington, N.J., he was the son of Anna Michaleck and Jacob Gustave Lengle.

Gus moved to Lake Harmony about 10 years ago. He lived most of his life in Irvington. He never finished high school because he needed to go to work to help support his family. At 22 he eloped with his sweetheart, Marguerite Hellmuth. They were married for 65 years at the time of her passing in 1999.Gus worked for 40 years as a traffic manager for J. Wiss & Company in Newark, N.J., while Marguerite stayed home and helped raise their two sons, Robert and William. It was Robert and William who brought Gus to Lake Harmony. Robert is a Kidder Township supervisor, where he also serves as police chairman and is also the Lake Harmony Fire Company treasurer.Robert, William and their families had vacationed in the Poconos. Upon retiring, both moved to the area. William and his family have since relocated to North Carolina. When asked what lessons he learned from his father, Robert replied "He always gave good financial advice and told us to get a good education."Gus remembers plenty of historical events of the past century, including the first time he voted for president (Calvin Coolidge), and he recalls the attack on Pearl Harbor as one of the most significant historical events of his lifetime. The most significant event of the past 100 years, however, has to be eloping with Marguerite as evidenced by the smile that comes to his face every time her name is mentioned.Gus keeps himself pretty busy for a centenarian. He walks a mile a day on his treadmill, is an active member of the Lake Harmony Fire Company and he never misses Friday night happy hour with his friends and family at the Boulder View Tavern in Lake Harmony. What does Gus Lengle want for his 100th birthday?"I would like another two or three good years," he says, "and after that, I will ask for another two or three."Gus's family and friends hosted a birthday party for him on Saturday evening at the Boulder View Tavern. His sons were there with their families, including his two grandchildren and his three great-grandchildren, as well as the gang from Friday night happy hour. Friends and family also attended from New Jersey, North Carolina and as far away as Texas.
