Cohort grant accepted; other actions taken

The Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 School Board accepted the 21st Century Community Learning Cohort Six grant for 2011-2014 in the total amount of $1,247,645,28 in action taken at its monthly meeting held Monday evening at the Maple Campus in Norwegian Township.

According to Dr. Diane M. Niederriter, executive director of the IU, the Cohort 6 grant will provide an after-school program in grades five through eighth in Minersville Area, Pottsville Area, North Schuylkill and Williams Valley school districts.The board approved payments to a number of districts for instructional services and supplies utilized during the second quarter of the 2011-2012 school year's after school program.The 21st Century Community Learnings Centers Cohort Five covers all costs. Sums paid to the districts were, Saint Clair Area, $17,859.92; Williams Valley High School, $15,027.41; Shenandoah Valley High School and Middle School, each, $10,958; Schuylkill Haven Area School District, $11,787/03; Pine Grove Middle School, $15,119.90; Pine Grove High School, $8,585.29; and Mahanoy Area Middle School, $10,205.97.Other businessThe board approved hiring of the following:Andrea Kimmel, Donaldson, part-time cafeteria worker at the Maple Avenue Campus at $7.50 per hour; Megan Majetsky, Quakake, Rush Township, and Richard Scheuer were added to the substitute teachers list at $80 a day; Amanda Guzik, Danielle Wank, and Karli Blackwell, all of Pottsville, added to the substitute teacher staff at $8.25 per hour; Karli Blackwell, Pottsville, hired as substitute cafeteria worker at $7.50 per hour; Patricia Pupo, Marian Heights, and Matthew Rose, Minersville, hired as substitute therapists at $80 per day.The board approved the adult education courses for spring 2012. There must be a minimum of eight enrollees in order to start a class and enrollments are limited to individuals who will have reached the age of 18 prior to the start of their class selection. The Schuylkill Technology Center will also make available training for metal and non-metal minors.
