Indians take down ESN

Jacob Hoats spent most of Lehighton's match with East Stroudsburg North waiting for his turn to wrestle.

Once he took to the mat, the 103 pound junior didn't waste any time, dispatching Nate Caraballo in a swift 40 seconds to seal the host Indians' 41-30 Mountain Valley Conference victory Thursday night.Lehighton (9-4 overall) picked up its initial MVC win against two losses by capturing eight of 13 contested bouts. The Indians earned bonus points in six of those wins, racking up five pins and a technical fall to hold off the Timberwolves (1-8, 0-3).Because of the draw, the match started at 119 pounds, which was a good spot for the Indians, who never trailed after racing out to an 18-0 lead, thanks to three opening falls."That was a nice place to start, because we hit our stride with those three matches and gained momentum for 145-160," said Lehighton coach Danny Williams. "Our kids wrestled physical, tough and smart."Freshman 119 pounder Kurtis Brownmiller (11-5) started the Indians on the right foot by cranking Justin Tripoli on his back with an arm bar for the mat slap at 3:22.Junior Jason McEvoy (9-10) needed just 1:22 to wrap up the head and arm of Jeremy Rigotti to gain the stop at 125.At 130, senior Jeremy Gornick stacked Anthony Ayr in 1:34 to complete the Tribe's hat trick. The T-wolves cut the deficit in half at 18-9 due to Ricky Johnson's 4-0 decision over Dylan Flexer at 135 and a cradle pin by Tanner Clark at 140.Lehighton then put some distance between itself and E.S. North with four straight triumphs. At 145, junior Anthony Farole improved to 18-2 by flattening Adam McCree in just 55 seconds.Junior Mitch Moyer (13-7) piled up three sets of back points at 152 in rolling to a 17-2 tech fall over Adrian Alvarez. At 160, junior Zach Coleman (12-9) got the clinching takedown just before the final buzzer to hold on for a 6-3 decision over Jared Stevens.Jjunior Mike Balliet (15-5) outmuscled Chris VonderHeide for an 11-5 verdict at 171, reversing the T-wolf wrestler to his back for a key five-point move in the third period. With the Indians' leading 35-9, Eastburg North put together a run in the upper weights, where the Indians are shorthanded and closed within 35-24.That's when Hoats took matters into his own hands."I shot off the whistle and put him (Caraballo) in a half-nelson," said Hoats, now 15-4. "I hate waiting to wrestle last, and I wanted to get it over as soon as possible."Hoats' clinching pin sent Lehighton riding high into its own Indian Duals tournament on Saturday."It was nice to get a win where we thought we could get one," said Williams. "This was a confidence builder. We have a big day Saturday with our tournament and this sets the tone for what we have to do."Lehighton 41, ES North 30103 - Jacob Hoats (L) pin Nate Caraballo, :40.112 - Dustin Dones (ESN) pin Nick Schaeffer, 1:50.*119 - Kurtis Brownmiller (L) pin Justin Tripoli, 3:22.125 - Jason McEvoy (L) pin Jeremy Rigotti, 1:22.130 - Jeremy Gornick (L) pin Anthony Ayr, 1:34.135 - Ricky Johnson (ESN) dec.
