Polk Township church receives conditional use approval

The Seed of Faith church got a conditional use approval during the regularly scheduled Polk Township supervisors meeting Monday. That came after a duly publicized conditional use public hearing immediately preceding the regular meeting. The conditional use allows the church to continue forward in Jonas at the former Roman Catholic Church building on Route 534. The 2.29-acre site is now in a commercial zone and the building has been empty for some time, ever since a previous business use left.

A non-littering ordinance was enacted, effective immediately. It forbids littering in public places; disallows sweeping or placing litter in gutters, ditches or swales; forbids general nuisances; disallows handbills on utility poles or placing them on vehicles and in various other sites and on other items; as well as defining and forbidding other aspects of littering.Violations will be a summary offense and carry with them a fine of $50 to $300 for the first offense; $300 to $600 for the second; with the third such offense generating a fine of $600 to $1,000.The township is to appoint an enforcement officer. After Supervisor Nancy C. May explained that the township has the option of keeping its own Earned Income Tax collector for another year and why perhaps the township should, the board voted 3-0 to keep current EIT collector Bev Christman rather than going to a tax collection agency.Having a local person in place will help catch the errors agencies are making, as per Berkheimer in Chestnuthill reportedly sending tax bills for Chestnuthill Township to Polk residents. It could have happened in light of Polk persons working in Chestnuthill and the larger company not knowing local situations, such as Christman would, explained May.Township solicitor Jamea Fareri has sent a letter to Berkheimer that the business may be using a wrong database.May announced that the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company would be hosting a Fire Safety Day from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, at the firehouse in Kresgeville. It will include such activities as a Medivac helicopter landing, a children's Safety Trailer, Jaws of Life demonstration, home safety information, school bus safety, food and prizes. She also announced that the addressing project is "not winding down yet." Polk is 10th on the list of municipalities to get the new addresses if applicable to a street or road and the related property. For getting the line painting done, Polk is second on the list. Paint has not been available for three weeks so the local work is on hold. Township road repairs, including patching are being done by the township crew. The trio of supervisors agreed unanimously to approve spending just over $3,000 for four new rear and four new front tires for township trucks; between $1,500 and $2,500 for having Victoria Mavis update the employee handbook; and $800 to repair a tarp at the solid waste transfer station area. They also agreed to approve one aspect of the Mirassol property matter but said the fence needs to be brought back to its original integrity and a 1-year time extension was given to "The Woods" final plan. The supervisors will next meet at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 27.
