Regional meeting

The CJERP Regional Planning Committee meeting is on the calendar for 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Chestnuthill Township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

Mission Meal

The West End Mission will serve its free meal from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert.

Chestnuthill Seniors

Seniors going to the Chestnuthill Senior Center Friday can choose to go to group picnic at The Roof from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with other Senior groups and the lunch hour beginning at 11:30. The center will be closed.

Arrangements must be made ahead of time by calling the Office of the Aging.

Next Wednesday’s menu calls for the light meal being pork and relish, cauliflower salad, nectarine, whole wheat bun and yogurt.

The regular meal includes turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, applesauce and a whole wheat roll.

Seniors attending the center are reminded to let their choice be known to the center manager, Dolores, by 11 a.m. the day before, at 570-242-6770.

Lioness officers

The Western Pocono Lioness Club officers for the 2019-20 program year were recently installed by the president of the Western Pocono Lions Club, Pat Buccieri.

The officers are: president, Barbe Sieg; vice president, Sue Sandman; treasurer, Paula Meitzler; secretary, Gail Malocheski; board members, Terry Reinhart and Georganna Wilken.

Trivia Night

Once again American Legion Post Home 927, Gilbert, is hosting a Trivia Night. It will be held from 7:30 to midnight Friday.

There will be food and drink specials.

Walk and archery

The West End Park and Open Space Commission has a “Mindful Outdoor Walk” on its calendar from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the West End Regional Park. There is no charge, but folks are reminded to dress for the weather.

At 10 a.m. one can come and try archery. All equipment will be provided, no experience is necessary.

All ages and families are welcome

Instruction will be by professionals.

Car show benefit

The sixth annual Wheels for Meals benefit for the county’s Meals on Wheels program is coming to the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert on Saturday.

Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is Sunday.

All proceeds from the show will benefit the Meals on Wheels organizations of Monroe and Northampton counties.

The event is being presented by the Monroe County Cruisers Car Club, Trolley Shops Cruisers, Hi-Winders, Pocono Area Corvette Club and Easton Area Corvette Club.

Bicycle ministry

No Kids Without Wheels will meet at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the pavilion. Members interested in helping with this ministry that repairs and distributes bicycles to those in need in our community are invited.

Pig roast benefit

The pig roast being held at the Rimrock Masonic Center will begin at noon Saturday. Food will be served around 3 p.m.

The event is a benefit for repairs of the building, in addition to being a social time.

Tickets available at the event or by calling Friedenberg at 570-269-7490. There is a cost for adults and children from 6 to 12, but those under 6 eat with no charge.

Kunkletown picnic

The Kunkletown picnic will be held Saturday in St. Matthew’s UCC grove.

Activities begin at 3 p.m. with music by the The Cramers Band & Friends to 6 p.m. The food stands open at 3 p.m.

Children’s activities begin at 4 p.m.

There is also an adult horseshoe contest, for which one must register by 3:30 p.m., and a cake raffle and cake walk starting at 6:30 p.m.

Parish Feast Day

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will celebrate its Parish Feast Day at the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday. All are welcome to be part of the procession and celebration thereafter.

Praise service

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, will have a praise service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting a Sunday supper from 3 to 4 p.m. on this coming Sunday.

Free concerts

The free summer concerts continue at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715 in Brodheadsville with a performance by Out of the Blue at 6 p.m. Sunday. Blues and classic rock: Clapton, SRV, Beatles, Eagles and more.

Special guests

The Summer Reading Program at Western Pocono Community Library will be wrapping up this month. This program is open to children of all ages, separated into two groups. Programs are held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 1 p.m., and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Special guests are scheduled throughout the summer. This summer the theme is: A Universe of Stories: Real Stories from Real People. For more information, contact the library at 570-992-7934.

However, August brings special guests to the Library for the Summer Program Reading.

Those special guests include: Thursday, Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. the young adult group will be visited by The Center for Vision Loss. This program will include free vision screening for all in attendance.

Aug. 6 at 10:30 a.m. and Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. West End Fire Company will be visiting the library with special stories, equipment and of course one of the firetrucks will be at the library. These programs are for all ages.

Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. West End Community Ambulance Association will be visiting the library with some great stories and insights on what it takes to be an EMT and paramedic. This program is also for all ages.

Wednesday Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. the Western Pocono Community Library Summer Reading Program will come to a close with a combined program for all ages; enjoy crafts and displays from the different programs all summer long.

Middlecreek’s Fusion

Middlecreek Christian Church is hosting its 2019 weekend of free music, ministry, fun, food and much more beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, and ending Sunday, Aug. 4, with a worship service at the pavilion. Although the event is free, love offerings will be appreciated and accepted throughout the weekend. Friday night dinner will begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed by music, a movie under the stars, then a campfire Bible study.

Saturday starts at 8 a.m. with breakfast followed by games, lunch, crafts, games, children ministry sessions, music, dinner and much more. Sunday begins at 9 a.m. with breakfast and then the closing worship service starting at 10:30 a.m.

August day camp

From the Monroe County Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center comes the dates for the Get in Touch with Nature day camp for two age groups taking place Aug. 5-16. Campers will be split into age groups and will participate in age-appropriate activities including: exploring the trails at the Kettle Creek Wildlife Sanctuary; learning about the critters, plants and habitats of the Poconos; venturing to other cool places in Monroe County; splashing around in the puddles, ponds and creeks at Kettle Creek and so much more.

Activities may include: creek snorkeling, tie-dyeing, bird banding, off-site hikes, fossils, cool critter activities, nature hikes, pond and stream study, scavenger hunt, tree and plant exploration, citizen science projects, and more.

Protect Veterans

Veterans have protected this country with their service. Today, there are scams that target veterans and their guaranteed benefits.

Mrs. Bush’s Personal Care Homes Inc. in Kunkletown will be hosting a free presentation, Operation Protect Veterans, by AARP at 6 p.m. Aug. 14.

This presentation discusses scams directed toward veterans and how to identify them. It will provide resources to verify them, and how to obtain legitimate information about guaranteed service benefits.

Additionally, materials from the fraud watch network and Pennsylvania Banking and Securities will be available. Each attendee will receive an AARP Watchdog Alert Handbook, along with a hard copy PowerPoint handout.

Hot dog fundraiser

The West End Volunteer Fire Company will be holding a hot dog and drinks sale at Kinsley’s ShopRite in the parking lot in Brodheadsville from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day Aug. 15-18.

Eldred trail

The walking trail in Eldred Township has become such a popular place for everyone to enjoy and is used by many residents, which include people walking their dogs, according to the township administration.

This has become quite a problem because of a few dog walkers who do not pick up after their dogs and worse, after they pick up the waste in the bags provided, they leave the bag behind.

There are signs at the doggy bag stations that specifically say: take the used doggy bag with you for disposal.

This behavior has all been noticed by patrons of the trail as well as when the mowing is being done.

As a way of curbing this problem it has been suggested that the township hold a meeting that all can attend to discuss forming a Trail Watch Committee and, hopefully, that will curtail the offenders and teach them some etiquette which in turn keeps the trail a pleasant place to be.

The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25 at the municipal building on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg. It is hoped this will alleviate the problem rather than restricting the trail by not allowing dogs to be walked there.
