Walnutport man in custody after standoff

A Walnutport man is in custody following a standoff that began late Tuesday night in Lehigh Township.

Township police responded at 11:30 p.m. to a home in the 4600 block of Steven Lane in the Walnutport section of the township for a domestic disturbance call.

A 32-year-old woman, came to the police station and reported she was assaulted by her husband, Adam Banotai, 41.

During the course of the investigation, officers observed injuries consistent with a domestic assault and obtained an arrest warrant for Banotai.

The victim advised police that Banotai had made threats of suicide, and texted the woman a message with a photograph of him with a handgun in his hand and threatened to shoot police if they came to the house.

Township officers were assisted in setting up a safe perimeter around the residence.

Numerous attempts were made to contact Banotai, as he was believed to be in the house. Attempts were made via phone calls and over PA loudspeaker.

Police were able to determine it was likely that Banotai was in the house and a search warrant was obtained. Pennsylvania State Police were notified and a request made for the Emergency Response Team to respond.

While communicating with the SERT commander, Banotai came out of the residence and observed police. He retreated back inside the residence.

Police attempted contact several times, requesting Banotai to surrender. A gun was observed in proximity to Banotai through a sliding-glass door.

Banotai refused to come out, so local officers maintained a perimeter to await the State Police SERT team.

After communication was re-established, a negotiator from the State Police was able to get Banotai to surrender and exit the house.

Banotai was taken into custody without further incident.

Banotai was arraigned before District Judge Robert A. Hawke of Walnutport, where he was arraigned. Bail was set at $30,000 straight.

Also assisting at the scene were the Walnutport, Slatington, Northampton, and North Catasauqua police departments, along with Pennsylvania State Police, Lehigh Township Fire Department, Northampton Regional EMS, as well as the Lehigh Township Public Works Department for assisting with shutting the road and being on standby.
