Pleasant Valley High School hosts author

On Friday, the Pleasant Valley High School is inviting the community to attend a presentation by author Caitlin Alifirenka on her dual-perspective memoir “I Will Always Write Back: How one Letter Changed two Lives.”

Alifirenka will give her presentation at 5:30 p.m. in the new high school auditorium, with doors to open at 5 p.m. and light refreshments to follow.

“I Will Always Write Back” is the first book that all high school students read over the summer as part of the new summer reading initiative called PV Nation: One Read. Alifirenka will also present to the high school students before speaking at the communitywide event.

The memoir describes the encounter of an all-American girl and a boy from Zimbabwe, who became pen pals and changed each others’ lives. Alifirenka co-authored the memoir with her pen pal, Martin Ganda, and journalist Liz Welch. Published in 2015, it became a New York Times best-seller.

The PV Nation committee chose this book because it is applicable to all ages and might inspire readers to reach out and help others in need the way Alifirenka’s family did, said committee member Michele Connors.

“The students are all really looking forward to meeting an author, it’s not something we’ve had here (in recent years),” she said.

Even if community members haven’t read the book, they should enjoy Alifirenka’s presentation.

“Even if they haven’t read it and are coming to see it first before they read it, or if they’re just interested in the story of a family who reached out and helped others, that’s fine too,” Connors said.

No reservations are needed to attend the presentation, and any questions can be directed to the school district at 570-402-1000.
