Summit Hill borough will be holding its annual electronics recycling on Saturday, but it will be different from those in the past.

Previously, residents merely placed their computers, printers and monitors at the curb and they were picked up.

This time, residents will have to take their recyclables to a site along the Ginder Field by the borough offices and show proof of residency. The recyclables can be taken there between 7 and 11 a.m.

The borough council made the changes because of abuses in the past events.

Sara Ruch, a member of the council, said that in other years, when Summit Hill had electronics recycling, out-of-town people would dump TVs and other electronics along driveways and at curbside throughout the borough, but especially along White Bear Drive.

Some residents would awake on the day of the recycling and find numerous electrical devices on their properties that didn’t belong to them.

Also in other years, a dumpster for the recyclables would be parked near the borough garage for those residents who might have missed the pickup date. Council members said not only did nonresidents dispose of their items in the dumpster, but they also unloaded such devices as appliances.

Kira Steber, secretary-treasurer for the borough, said acceptable electronics include TVs (no more than four), computer monitors, computer towers, keyboards, computer mice, printers, copiers, scanners, laptops and tablets.

Steber said the regular spring cleanup will be held on:

• April 27 for the east side of the borough along with Knepper’s Trailer Court and all of White Bear Drive.

• May 4 for the west side of the borough along with Laurel Drive and all of Mountaintop Road.

Items to be picked up during the spring cleanup include tires (no more than four), tire rims, auto body parts, refrigerators, vending machines, dehumidifiers, water coolers, heat pumps, washers, dryers and stoves.

Refrigerators and similar appliances must have Freon removed and must be tagged or they won’t be picked up.
