Carbon makes changes in LANTA pact
Carbon County has agreed to make a few behind-the-scene changes to its transportation system.
Last week, the commissioners approved three actions regarding the management of the Carbon Transit system through LANTA. These actions include a new management agreement, advertising policy and forgiving a loan that was issued in 1999.
Owen O’Neil, executive director of LANTA, explained that the agreements just provide better management of the transportation system for Carbon County.
Under the agreement, Carbon Transit will continue to operate as a division of LANTA, but it will also LANTA to consolidate some of the grants and some reporting that is required by the Federal Transit Administration.
It also transfers the vehicles Carbon County currently owns for the transit system to LANTA, who already provides the insurance, maintenance and upkeep of the vehicles.
O’Neil said that this action will make it easier for both parties involved when it comes to needing to replace the vehicles.
Of the second action, O’Neil explained that it allows LANTA to sell advertising on the sides of the vehicles.
O’Neil said of the third motion that the loan forgiveness stems back from a loan the county issued on May 12, 1999 for $60,000.
LANTA, through Carbon County Community Transit, has paid $3,600 a year in interest since the loan was issued.
“The Carbon County Community Transit has always made that annual payment,” O’Neil said, adding that the agreement shows the loan is considered paid.
Commissioner Rocky Ahner said that through discussions with LANTA, the county has voiced some of the concerns since the county isn’t in the business to manage transit so he believes these actions will help the riders moving forward.
