Schuylkill to receive opioid settlement funds

Schuylkill County could see money from the $26 billion opioid settlement announced by Attorney General Josh Shapiro in July.

An amount has not been determined.

Commissioners approved the execution of two agreements Wednesday that release its claims against the three major pharmaceutical companies and the company that marketed opioids.

The state could receive about $1 billion from the settlement, according to Shapiro.

The amount distributed will depend on the participation of state and local governments.

Opioid treatment will account for a large portion of the spending.

At least 45 states have already signed on to the agreement, with Oregon on the verge of signing on.

The agreement calls for Cardinal, McKesson, and Amerisource Bergen, the top three pharmaceutical distributors and Johnson and Johnson, which manufactured and delivered opioids, to pay up to $21 billion over 18 years. Johnson & Johnson will pay up to $5 billion.
