Walnutport receives $100K CDBG grant

Walnutport has received an early Christmas present.

That would be a $100,000 Community Development Block Grant, as announced at Thursday’s borough council meeting.

Borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz informed council that the CDBG was for 2022, and was awarded to the borough to continue its Lincoln Avenue to Third Avenue project.

After the meeting, Wentz said it’s extra, and as a result, the borough can apply for the same type of project, water, sewer and street construction.

“We have more than enough money to complete Lincoln Avenue, (at) no cost of any tax dollars at this point,” Wentz said. “We are very much in a good position with all of this at this point.”

However, Wentz noted the problem is they can’t get the pipe.

“It probably isn’t scheduled to arrive until January or February,” he said. “That’s why it probably isn’t going to start until March or April.”

Wentz said this has been made possible thanks to the cooperation of the borough and the borough’s municipal authority.

“Borough council and the (Walnutport) Municipal Authority are working like a well-oiled machine,” he said. “They’re getting things accomplished for the taxpayers.”

In July, council awarded a bid in the amount of $277,110 to Bellview Pump, pending review by the borough and Northampton County.

Borough engineer Jason Newhard said at that time the project would include street overlay, a new water main, service lines and storm sewer upgrades as needed on part of the 800 and 900 blocks of Lincoln Avenue.

The borough had previously received $300,000 in CDBG funds, and $20,000 courtesy of the Community Investment Partnership Program through Northampton County, for the project.

Wentz previously said the Lincoln Avenue water main replacement project is a joint venture between the borough and the Walnutport Municipal Authority, and would replace the water main, fire hydrants, service lines and storm sewer if needed, from South Best Avenue to Third Avenue.
