Nesquehoning council
Nesquehoning Borough Council acted on or discussed the following items during its monthly meeting last week.
• Approved a resolution to apply for a Local Share Account grant in the amount of $216,008 for improvements to the Early Johnson Memorial Park.
• Approved a resolution to apply for a Local Share Account grant on behalf of the Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 in the amount of $74,341 for the purpose of constructing a pavilion and to create a memorial site for veterans and first responders.
• Approved a request from the Carbon County Commissioners naming the new road off Emergency Lane in the Emergency Management complex on the Broad Mountain. The new road name is Public Safety Lane and will lead to the emergency operations training center that is being constructed.
• Approved a request for ladder truck maintenance at a cost of $7,875.
• Mayor Sam Kitchko announced that trick-or-treat night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31.
• Approved sending an updated winter parking plan to borough solicitor Robert Yurchak for review. Councilman Frank Jacobs voted note for the updated plan.
• Voted to allow Yurchak to start the process to go after the bond issue regarding the unit 2 maintenance project at the sewer plant. The company, Eastern Environmental, has not fulfilled its end of the contract and has delayed the completion of the restoration by nearly three years.
• Councilman Louis Paul commended the borough’s part-time police officers, Allen Strohl and Robert Lilly, for their efforts to provide good coverage since beginning with the force earlier this year.
• Approved an agreement with Portnoff to collect 2021 delinquent taxes and also directing the Carbon County Tax Claim Bureau to not collect 2021 and future delinquent taxes for the borough.
• Approved an agreement with Zelenkofske Axelrod LLC at a cost of $11,000 to provide technical assistance in relation to the policies and procedures of the funds received from the American Rescue Plan Act.
• Approved the 2022 Police Pension Fund and PMRS MMO requirements, which total $68,294.
