Walnutport has adopted a curfew ordinance that makes it illegal to trespass on borough property from dusk to dawn.
Borough council unanimously agreed last week to pass the measure, which is geared to discourage trespassing at its playground and canal areas.
As per the ordinance, all borough property is not open from dusk to dawn, unless special permission has been granted by borough council.
However, nighttime fishing will still be allowed at the canal.
The only anticipated cost to the borough is the purchase of about 10 signs.
Councilman David Stankovic broached the idea to council in July after he was asked by Walnutport Playground Association President Brian Filchner to have council consider a dusk-to-dawn ordinance.
Borough police Chief Pete Wayda said at that time a benefit to having an ordinance is that all fine money comes to the borough if there’s damage.
Wayda said at that time it helps when residents report issues they see to the police department. For example, someone who had just moved to the borough posted on Facebook that he saw someone throw a firework into the canal, which killed about 25 fish.
