New festival debuts in Weissport

It was a day of family fun at Weisstock, a community celebration held Saturday at the Weissport Park.

While this year’s event was to help raise funds for a new roof at St. Peter’s Community Resource Center, it is hoped that this will become an annual event for the area.

The festival was scheduled after the Redneck Festival, normally held Labor Day weekend, was disbanded.

Nicole Baker, director of St. Peter’s Center, said, “We had a group of individuals trying to fundraise to replace the roof on the center. We had people throwing out a bunch of ideas. One person mentioned they would like to do a craft fair. I said, ‘Well, we lost the Redneck Festival. Why don’t we come up with a new festival?’ I know the community really enjoys it.”

According to Baker, the festival was put together in only two months.

The day featured crafters and vendors, four different school groups were represented, live entertainment throughout the day, a basket auction, bingo and food.

Gombert Family Games was on hand with kiddie rides and games.

“This year it was for the community center,” Baker said, “But, going forward, we plan on partnering with the Weissport Event Committee and building it to something larger.”

St Peter’s Community Resource Center is a bare-necessities pantry, and is open the fourth Saturday of every month. It’s open to SNAP residents of Lehighton, Palmerton, and Jim Thorpe school districts, for SNAP families to come and pick up items not covered by food stamps, such as toilet paper, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The center is located at 177 Main Road, Franklin Township.
