NJ man falls to death in sky diving incident

A New Jersey man fell to his death on Sunday in a sky diving accident in Monroe County.

State police at Stroudsburg said the incident was reported at 11:35 a.m. at 343 Sarah Way in Smithfield Township, at the Sky’s the Limit Inc. facility.

Troopers identified the deceased as Edward Harney, 74, of Paramus.

Police responded to a report of a parachuter into the woods. Harney’s body was found 363 feet east of Airport Road.

Troopers said interviews with friends of the deceased indicated he was an experienced sky diver who had just received his jumping gear from being serviced before his jump. Harney had jumped multiple times at the Monroe location and was accompanied by three other experienced jumpers. Harney and the three other jumpers, along with a pilot, traveled to an altitude of about 14,000 feet before all four jumped together from the plane.

At about 5,000 feet the jumpers broke apart from one another and it appeared as if Harney’s first parachute opened. Harney then began to spiral and spin until his parachute was separated from him. Harney disappeared into the wood line.

Deputy Coroner Maurice Moreno pronounced Harney dead at the scene at 1:13 p.m. His body was removed from the scene by the coroner’s office personnel and an autopsy is scheduled.

The Federal Aviation Administration was notified and will be collecting all parachute apparatus, troopers said.
