Woman arrested after causing crash

A Weatherly woman was arrested by Nesquehoning police after she caused a crash while driving with drugs in her system.

According to Police Chief Sean Smith, who conducted the arrest, Amanda J. Dezolt, 28, of 123 Grist Mill Road, was arrested following a head-on crash within borough limits. The incident occurred at 8:34 a.m. Dec. 11.According to the affidavit of probable cause, officer Timothy Wuttke and Smith were dispatched to Route 93 for a motor vehicle accident. Dispatch further advised that it was a head-on crash involving a truck and box van, and injuries were reported.Upon arrival Smith spoke with and identified Dezolt, as well as Francesco Fermin, no address given, as the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the crash. Fermin advised police that he was fine, but Dezolt was entrapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated by fire and ambulance personnel. Jim Thorpe police also were assisting on-scene.At the time, Smith could see Dezolt's ankle, which appeared to have a compound fracture.Police spoke with Renee Russell, a witness at the scene, who said she was traveling south on Route 93 and had just passed the Carbon County Correctional Facility, which is a sharp turn, when a silver Dodge Durango began to pass in the northbound lane. She also observed a mail truck in the northbound lane as the Durango was attempting to pass. The mail truck swerved into her lane of travel to avoid hitting the Durango. The Durango then cut back into the southbound lane, striking the mail truck head-on.Officers spoke with Fermin, the driver of the mail truck, who confirmed the witness' story, adding that after he swerved into the southbound lane to avoid striking the Durango, driven by Dezolt, he observed the vehicle strike a guardrail in the northbound lane before crossing back over the northbound lane and into the southbound lane, striking his vehicle head-on.Smith then spoke to Dezolt, who was now on a stretcher, and asked for her name, date of birth and home information, which she provided. She told police she was traveling south on Route 93 and as she passed a black car illegally, she lost control and a truck hit her.Smith responded that she passed a vehicle illegally in the northbound lane and that it was Dezolt who swerved and struck the truck.Police asked Dezolt if that was correct, and she agreed. While police conducted a crash investigation, Wuttke and Jim Thorpe officer Lee Marzen advised Smith that they found in plain view blunt material that is consistent with the use of marijuana and multiple empty pill containers of oxycodone.Officers approached Dezolt and asked about the drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, to which she responded, "I smoke pot."Wuttke then asked Dezolt to consent to a search of the vehicle and submit to a chemical blood test, and she agreed to both.During the search, police found seven Viibryd 40 mg tablets, multiple zigzag wraps, several baggies with small amounts of green vegetable matter and prescriptions for painkillers. The medications found were photographed and given to the medics to take to the hospital.Dezolt's blood tested positive for numerous drugs. She has been charged with two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and one count each of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, limitations on overtaking to the left, no passing zones and careless driving.
