2020 primary: Area will see three congressional races in November

Republican Party voters decided on two contested U.S. congressional district nominations in the Times News area on Tuesday while the Democrats picked one candidate to advance to the fall.

There are three districts in the Times News area, including the 7th, which includes parts of Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton counties; 8th, which includes parts of Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties; and the 9th, which includes all of Carbon and Schuylkill counties and parts of Columbia, Lebanon, Luzerne, Montour and Northumberland counties.

Here are the unofficial results in those districts:

7th District

Republican Lisa Scheller is the apparent winner of a two-person race, having defeated Dean N. Browning by a vote of 25,455 to 23,845. She will face incumbent Democrat Susan E. Wild in the general election. The latter was unopposed Tuesday and collected 59,448 token votes.

8th District

Six people aspired to win the GOP nomination Tuesday.

The apparent winner is James R. Bognet, who tallied 12,146 votes, just a few hundred ahead of Theodore V. Daniels, who totaled 11,746. The other candidates included Earl Granville, 9,226; Michael P. Marsicano, 5,826; Harry Haas IV, 3,553; and Mikel J. Cammisa, 881.

Bognet will go head-to-head with Democrat Matthew Cartwright in the general election.

The latter was unchallenged within his party and received 32,258 complimentary votes Tuesday.

9th District

Susan L. Quick won a two-­person race for the Democratic nomination in the district, defeating Gary S. Wegman by a vote of 11,888 to 10,394. She will face incumbent Republican Daniel P. Meuser in the general election. He was unopposed Tuesday and received 51,329 complimentary votes.
