Summit Hill’s 4th celebration ‘just a great day’
Summit Hill didn’t have fireworks or an elaborate parade for its Fourth of July celebration, but the festivities held in the borough on Saturday were just as fun and impressive.
The event, planned for Ludlow Park, was moved indoors because of the dangerous heat wave, said Kathy Gieniec, chairman of the Summit Hill Recreation Commission.
The commission sponsored the Fourth of July celebration which included a flyover by an airplane that emitted red, white and blue trails of smoke, live music, a “Happy Birthday America” birthday cake, the singing of “Happy Birthday” to America, food, socializing and a visit from “George Washington” and “Lady Liberty.”
Oh, and professional wrestling legend “Hulk Hogan” impersonator also attended.
In the words of Summit Hill Borough Council member Joanie Morana, “It was just a great day for the town.”
Throughout the day, hundreds of people attended the American 250th anniversary celebration.
A highlight of the day was the honoring of Summit Hill American Legion Post 316 by the Recreation Commission. Gieniec presented a plaque to American Legion Commander Brad Jones recognizing the Legion and its auxiliary for the sacrifices and support its members have made through the generations since it was formed after World War I.
Although the Recreation Commission planned the event, several borough council members spent the entire day helping at the event. Besides Morana, other council members included Joseph Weber, Marlene Basiago and Ed Kane. Other borough officials who assisted were Mayor Karen Ruzicka, Emergency Management director Kevin Steber, borough secretary and treasurer Kira Steber and fire Chief Shawn Hoben.
Morana said, “It was a great testament to the 250th anniversary, the birthday of our country.”
Prior to the festivities, a memorial service was held for the late borough council president David Wargo, who died on June 8. Morana said because of Wargo’s love for the community, “we wish he could have been her for this.”
Gieniec said, “I think it was a success. If Dave Wargo was here, he would have loved it.”
The flyover was by pilot Bob Greenall of Lansford in his homebuilt airplane. Greenall owns and operates Flying Colors Gender Reveals. He is familiar in the Panther Valley for flying over home football games and releasing the colored trails of smoke. He said he started as business for gender reveals, but now has flyovers for birthday parties and other special occasions.
The audience members seemed to love the characters who attended, with many posing for photos with them. They were Washington, portrayed by John Zweisdak; Lady Liberty, portrayed by Andrea Boswell and Hulk Hogan, portrayed by Charles Durning.
Music was by the local band Coal Town Blues.
