Lansford Attic light, smoke make fire scene look menacing

Sometimes fire scenes aren't what they appear to be, even to firefighters.

Firefighters were summoned to a dwelling fire shortly after 6 a.m. today at the corner of Kline Avenue and Cortright Street. When the volunteers reached the scene, they noticed a glow in the attic that appeared to be flames. It was termed a "working" fire. The situation, though, wasn't as serious as it was thought to be, said Lansford Fire Chief Joe Greco. As it turned out, the house was filling with smoke because of an oil burner malfunction. The attic had smoke in it. The walls of the attic were apparently painted orange, and a light was left on in the attic. Because of the smoke, the light and the orange walls made it appear that the attic had flames.Greco said the oil burner filled the house with the smoke, but firefighters quickly got the situation under control.Had it been a working fire, it could have been a very serious situation since numerous homes on Kline Avenue are connected and made of wood. The fire alarm was called in by a neighbor. Nobody was home at the residence where the oil burner malfunction occurred.Responding were firefighters from Lansford, Summit Hill and Coaldale. Lehighton Ambulance Corps also was dispatched.Fire police from Lansford and Summit Hill handled traffic control and Lansford police also responded. The smoke damage was contained to one residence.
