Lansford man leads police on chase

A Lansford man faces multiple charges after leading police on a pursuit through town early Sunday morning.

Matthew Frederick, 30, of East Ridge Street, was arraigned on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude an office, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia and numerous traffic violations.

He was committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning in lieu of $50,000.

The incident began at 12:45 a.m. when Lansford police saw Frederick driving east on West Abbott Street in a minivan with broken rear window, which was covered with plastic, court papers said. Police know that Frederick does not have a valid driver’s license.

The officer initiated a traffic stop, but Frederick failed to stop at a posted stop sign and accelerated north on Coal Street, court papers said. He failed to stop at stop sign at Coal and West Bertsch streets, turned right headed east on Bertsch before going through the Turkey Hill market parking lot, court papers said.

Frederick turned right on West Patterson Street, headed east again before turning left onto Springgarden Street, continuing to fail to stop at stop sign at East Ridge Street, court papers said.

Frederick headed east across East Ridge Street, failing to stop at stop signs at Walnut and Pardee streets. He turned right onto Pardee Street and right again back onto Patterson Street headed west, court papers said.

Frederick made another right onto Leisenring Street headed south, and turned left into the 500 block of East Ridge Street, stopping in front of his home, where he exited the vehicle, court papers said.

Police ordered Frederick on the ground and took him into custody without incident. Inside his jacket pocket, officers found a rubber-banded bundle of three small plastic bags, containing blue wax packets labeled, “Doughboy,” which were believed to be a controlled substance, court papers said.

Police also found syringes with residue and pouch containing 10 bags labeled “Doughboy” with residue in another of his pockets, and Frederick told officers that he had used about 10 of the packets they recovered, court papers said.

Frederick appeared under the influence and taken to the Lansford Police Department, where he refused field sobriety tests. He told police he was going through withdrawal from “Tranq,” and he believed the drugs to be a mix of “Tranq” and “Fent,” which are controlled substances, court papers said.

He was transported to St. Luke’s Miner’s Campus for a blood test.
