Tamaqua district looks to sell solar certificates

Tamaqua Area School Board will be looking to sell off some solar renewable energy certificates when it meets tonight.

Business manager Connie Ligenza said the district was looking at selling 3,263 SRECs at $31 each, which is a value of $101,153.

“Our next round of SRECs are set to expire in May. We’ve been watching the value,” she said. “It has been trending downward. I don’t see any indication that these are going higher. I recommend that we go ahead and pull the trigger.”

Superintendent Ray Kinder said that these are expiring, so now would be the time to move on the sale.

Board Vice President Nicholas Boyle said the district should sell as many as possible, due to the number of large solar projects in the county which will lower the certificates’ value.

“The SRECs market is going to dump, and they’re going to be zero,” he said. “I don’t think we should keep these as long as we are.”

The district is already selling the certificates at $19 below the expectations, Kinder said. The district earns certificates for energy produced by its solar panels, and has been selling certificates at $50.

Ligenza said she would be presenting the board options to sell existing certificates.

TASB committees also advanced these items for the board meeting:

Policies on graduation and transportation on second reading.

Renewal agreement for the Time Clock Plus contract in the amount of $12,918. Ligenza said they continue to work out some bugs with the system, noting that the district has a complicated payroll. She hopes to iron out the issues while still under contract.

One-year renewal with The Nutrition Group, effective July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. This is the second year of a five-year contract, which needs board approval each year, Ligenza said.
