Marine Corps League hosting second annual golf tournament

The second annual Golf Tournament hosted by the Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League will be held at 8 a.m. May 11 at Blue Shamrock Golf Course in Palmerton.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m., and will feature a 4-person scramble format. The registration deadline for sponsorships and golfers is May 1. Payment must be sent with registration.

Tom Kobal, a member of the Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League, said there will be over 80 golfers who will play 18 holes. Of those, he said several are flying in from other states to participate.

Kobal said they picked up 14 new sponsors for this year’s event.

Jim Laub, commandant, Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League Inc. Detachment 626, said last year the group gave out $3,700 to local veterans or charities.

“We want to do better than last year,” Laub said. “We’d like to do at least that much again for all the stuff these guys did and gave going into the military; they gave their time, it don’t hurt to give back.”

Laub said last year the organization was able to donate to the Valor Clinic, Trees for Troops, Wreaths Across America, and Together with Veterans.

“We just do the best with what we can to help out, “Laub said. “We do what we do, get as many people in as we can.”

Kobal added that the Lehighton KIA Dealership is sponsoring a 2024 KIA car hole-in-one challenge on the 10th hole.

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League is a veterans organization founded to continue the traditions and spirit of all Marines who proudly wear, or have worn the eagle, globe, and anchor of the Corps.

Kobal noted that last year’s inaugural event had 22 teams, 82 golfers, and said the weather was great.

He said this year they are looking to have 28 teams, and added, “We just need to make sure Mother Nature is on our side.”

Laub said the community service organization is always looking for members, and that any Marine Corps veteran who would like to join may do so.

They meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Lehighton American Legion Post 314.
