Lansford teenager achieves rank of Eagle Scout

A Lansford teenager who belongs to Boy Scout Troop 755, Clamtown, received the highest award in Boy Scouting on Saturday during a Court of Honor ceremony held at DiMaggio’s, Tamaqua.

Sam Turrano, son of Mindy Turrano, became the latest and 68th member of the troop to attain the honor.

He received scouting’s highest honor from Troop 755 Scoutmaster Damon Krall, under the charge of “honor, loyalty, courage and service.”

Turrano is a junior at Marian Catholic High School, where he was enrolled earlier this year in the Robert F. Kennedy Chapter of the National Honor Society, and has a sister Maggie who is a sophomore there.

He was officially welcomed into the Eagle Scout Honor Roll of Troop 755, and its predecessor, Troop 154, which enrolled its first Eagle Scout in January 1956.

For his Eagle Scout project, Turrano decided to honor the memory of his late grandfather, Michael Turrano, by building and placing a bench at the Lansford Little League Field on East Street in his hometown. His grandfather had been the league’s longstanding president, having served it for over 35 years before his death in 2015.

The bench was placed on a hill overlooking all three fields at the Lansford baseball complex, including one his grandfather helped build for the Lansford Babe Ruth team.

“Giving back to the Little League association was truly a way for me to give back to my grandfather for his devotion and love for the organization, youth of the community and baseball games in general,” Sam said.

Through his scouting career that started in 2019, the new Eagle Scout went through the progression of ranks, becoming a Tenderfoot on 2020, Second Class scout the following year, attaining First Class and Star Scout status in 2022, and becoming a Life Scout on June 25, 2023. He was certified by the Eagle Scout board of review as an Eagle Scout on Dec. 28 of last year.

Sam earned 23 merit badges through his scouting journey, including First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in Society, Citizenship in the World, Communication, Cooking, Personal Fitness, Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Science.

Also, Personal Management, Swimming, Camping, Family Life, Nature, Programming, Archaeology, Engineering, Medicine, Entrepreneurship, Disabilities Awareness, Space Exploration and Wood Carving.

In addition, he earned assistant patrol and senior patrol leader positions in the troop.
