High winds, heavy rains team up for double weather blow

Gusty winds and heavy rains delivered a one-two punch to our region over the weekend.

Blustery conditions were expected to continue throughout much of the day, according to Alyssa Glenny, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.

“In the last 48 hours, (our) portion of Pennsylvania picked up between one and one-quarter and one and one-half inches (of rain) while locations north of Allentown picked up upward of one to one and one-half,” said Glenny, who noted that with the soils being pretty saturated this time of year, heavy rains combined with high winds could lead to some issues. “The rivers are elevated in the eastern and southeastern part of the state, so that will be something to watch for sure.”

Some roads were closed due to localized flooding, including Delaware Avenue in Palmerton Saturday night and Koch Road in Towamensing Township.

Glenny said the wind gusts through today in the northeast may exceed 50 mph, while in the southeast they should not exceed 40 to 50 mph into the afternoon hours.

“By tonight, the windy conditions should lessen, (and) expecting a light breeze into the evening hours,” she said. “After midnight, it should lighten up for sure.”

However, until it does, Glenny cautioned there was some risk remaining through this morning.

“But as the winds taper off by the afternoon and evening hours, the risk will decline in terms of power outages,” she said. “With the dry conditions from this morning onward, the flooding risk will decline with the dry weather expected the next few days since all the rain has come to an end from the storm this weekend.”

Glenny said that while highs today were only expected in the 40s, we should be in store for some improvements in the upcoming days.

She said Tuesday should see widespread 60s, and potentially even touching the 70s by midweek in southeast part of the state.

Glenny said it’s expected to stay pretty dry into the midweek, with the chance for showers by Thursday in the northern half of the state.

She said that on Friday, there’s a chance for a storm to move through the mid-Atlantic part, though by Saturday it should move off the coast with temperatures still on the warm side.

Into Sunday, we’ll have to monitor another storm that could arrive, Glenny said.

“We’re going to have some sunshine after this wind lessens up, which will definitely be an improvement,” she said, adding that with the ground being saturated, “we especially worry with downed trees.”
