Police release identity of man shot in burglary

The identity of the man who was shot and killed by police after he lunged at them with a machete during a Shenandoah burglary has been released by Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said Bryon David Scheuring, 32, of Shenandoah, was pronounced dead by the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office following the early Monday morning incident.

According to police, officers from the Shenandoah and Mahanoy City police departments were dispatched to 309 W. Coal St. in Shenandoah at 12:38 a.m. for a report of a burglary in progress.

Police spoke to the property owner who has video surveillance inside the unoccupied property. The owner told police he saw a person inside wearing a mask and carrying a “big” knife.

As officers searched the residence, they found Scheuring hiding under a bed in an upstairs bedroom. Police said officers gave numerous verbal commands to Scheuring to surrender, but he did not comply.

Police said that as the officers began moving the bed to take Scheuring into custody, he lunged at them with a machete.

A Shenandoah police officer fired one round from his pistol, which struck Scheuring. Officers rendered aid and called emergency medical responders but Scheuring died from the injuries.

Pennsylvania State Police’s Troop L Major Case Team continues to investigate the incident.
