Pink Light Walks draw attention to breast cancer

Several pink light walks will be held to draw attention to breast cancer.

The Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club will be hosting the 18th annual Pink Light Walk and Basket Raffle on Tuesday at the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band Hall. Doors will open to the basket raffle and registration at 4 p.m. and the walk to the Lehighton Amphitheatre will begin at 6 p.m.

While at the Amphitheatre, the crowd will hear from Dr. Ranju Gupta, Lehigh Valley Health Network Hematologist/Oncologist and Amanda Lindenmoyer, Breast Cancer Survivor.

Lindenmoyer is a strong proponent of women receiving mammograms. All survivors will be acknowledged with a gift and will be provided with the opportunity to introduce themselves and share their number of years of survivorship.

Other highlights of the event include each participant receiving a glow bracelet, a bag piper (weather permitting) to escort the crowd down the steps at the amphitheatre and a visit from the Pink Heels Ambulance. There will also be a few vendors on hand to receive information or purchase items.

Upon return to the band hall, all supporters who pre-registered will receive a make-up bag with a few goodies. There will also be refreshments and winners of the basket raffle will be announced.

The event is free and will be held rain or shine.

Participants are asked to pre-register via email at pinklightwalk@yahoo.com and indicate whether they are a survivor or supporter. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

All proceeds benefit the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

If unable to attend the event and individuals are interested in donating a basket or providing a monetary donation, they may reach out to Brenda Green at 570-657-7453.

East Stroudsburg University and Lehigh Valley Hospital–Pocono will host the annual Pink Light Walk on Thursday. The walk is held each year to raise awareness about breast cancer, remember those we have lost to the disease, and emphasize the importance of early screening and detections.

Before the walk, at 5 p.m., education tables with interactive programs will be held in the ESU Science and Technology Center on Normal Street. The Pink Light Walk will begin from there at 6 p.m. and end at the Dale and Frances Hughes Cancer Center located on 181 East Brown St., East Stroudsburg, where there will be remarks from LVPG’s surgical oncologist, Krista Bott, MD and Pink Light Honorary Chair and cancer survivor, Sarah Treible. The event will conclude with the lighting of a tree in pink lights in front of the cancer center.

The 20th annual West End Pink Light Walk will be held Oct. 10 at the American Legion in Gilbert. Doors open at 5:30 and the walk begins at 6:30 p.m. More details to come.
