Model train enthusiasts roll into Walnutport

The Carbon Model Railroad Society held its annual Spring Train Meet and Sale at the Diamond Fire Company Bingo Hall in Walnutport on Sunday.

The room was filled with vendors selling train sets, train cars and engines, and all sorts of accessories like buildings, automobiles, and other train display supplies. Plus, there were train displays set up so you can see them in action.

Larry Koehler from Saylorsburg had a portable train display built into a custom carrying case.

“It took, on and off, several years to build,” Koehler said.

Connie and Richard Banko of Kunkletown have a unique train display at their home on Lower Smith Gap Road.

“We have an outdoor garden railway that combines the G-scale trains plus the living plants in the garden,” Connie said.

The Bankos, along with Eileen Schneider, Palmerton, brought one of their G-scale engine and cars on display.

Bob and Fay Youngkin, of Lehighton, started collecting trains in the 1970s, and were selling a variety of trains and accessories.

“We started this back in 1975 or 1976,” Fay said. “My husband, Bob, has a layout in the basement.”

This is the 35th year that the Carbon Model Railroad Society hosted the spring meet.

“The (Carbon Model Railroad) Society formed back in 1985,” said President Garry Mack. “A friend of mine in the hobby business wanted to start a club like this. He talked to me, and we formed the club.”

The Fall Train Meet will be Nov. 5. The club also plans several open house events in July.

“It’s not just to buy and sell model railroad things; it’s a club,” Mack said. “We love the model railroad hobby. There are a lot of great people in it, we meet a lot of new friends. There’s some social interaction, and we have a good time.”

The society meets every Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 in its building at 500 Ore Street, Bowmanstown in a former chapel. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. For more information, go to www.cmrs.info or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/cmrs.info.
