Park curfew change proposed

Lehighton youngsters may have to wrap up their activities in borough parks a bit earlier in the future.

Borough council on a 6-0 vote Monday agreed to advertise a change in the ordinance of the borough parks’ curfew to 9 p.m.

That includes Community Grove, where mischief has been a problem for years. The park’s hours are now 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“I’d like to see the curfew changed to 8 (p.m.),” Mayor Clark Ritter said. “8 o’clock, I believe for all the parks is a good time.”

However, Councilman Ryan Saunders said his concern is that the booster club practices at Baer Memorial often stretch beyond that time.

“It definitely should be much earlier than 10,” Saunders said. “I think 9 would be sufficient.”

Borough Manager Steve Travers said they are working on cameras for the Grove, and the hope is to have them in place by mid-December.

Ritter said it’s a certain group of kids who like to hang together and get in some kind of mischief.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky said a curfew of 10 p.m. is “way too late.”

Abelovsky said that if the change doesn’t work after some time, council can always revisit the matter.

Councilman Joe Flickinger was absent.
