Nesquehoning Borough News

Nesquehoning Borough Council, at its monthly meeting on Wednesday, discussed or acted on the following items:

• Reappointed Sam Kitchko to the borough planning commission.

• Announced that a zoning hearing will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday. One of two applicants on the list, Family Promise, may request a postponement for its proposal, RoniSue Ahner, borough secretary/treasurer, said.

• Adopted an ordinance officially naming Iron Horse Way on the new Reading and Northern property off Route 54.

• Adopted two resolutions for the Nesquehoning Conservation Club and Anthracite Little League. Both groups are applying for Local Share Account funds for various projects at their sites in Nesquehoning.

• Councilwoman Lois Kuba announced that a boot drive for the three Nesquehoning fire companies will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 9 in the borough. Motorists will see members of the fire companies and other volunteers at various intersections during the day as a way to raise money for the fire companies.

• Announced that trick or treat night will take from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 31.

• John McArdle, Nesquehoning Hose Company fire chief, reminded residents that fire prevention week begins Oct. 9. Representatives from the fire companies will be at Panther Valley Elementary School for a program on Oct. 14.

• Approved a quote from VP Construction LLC for $4,200 to pave a portion of Industrial Road where a pipe repair was completed while Reading and Northern completed its crossing.

• Approved a consulting agreement with Emory Toth of Water Mechanics for 2023 with no changes from the current contract.

• Approved a quote from VP Construction for $6,200 for a base coat along West Columbus Avenue where a sewer pipe was replaced.

• Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani reported that there was a hiccup with scheduling the last electronics recycling event in the borough. Because of the error on the recycling company’s part, the borough received a 50% discount for the event.

• Guardiani also reminds residents that bulk pickup is the first trash day of the month. Only one large item is allowed during bulk pickups each month. Items that cannot be considered a large item for trash include air conditioners and televisions. Residents can take those directly to Tamaqua Transfer.

• Tires are not permitted as a bulk pickup item, but the borough has a tire pickup program. Tire permits can be purchased for $5 per tire or $10 for a truck tire from the borough office and a scheduled pickup will then be set.

• Council reminds residents that there is a borough ordinance requiring residents to take their trash cans in no later than 24 hours after trash has been picked up. No trash is to be put out before 24 hours before a pickup day and anything not picked up cannot remain on the curb until the next week’s pickup.

• Any resident filing a complaint with the borough should fill out a form with the borough office. Names and contact information are required for the complaint, but are kept confidential to the public.

• Because of a webinar taking place in October, the workshop and monthly meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m.
