Pleasant Valley athletic director resigns

After only five months on the job, Pleasant Valley School District’s athletic director resigned.

The school board acknowledged the resignation of Kyle Bonser at its meeting Thursday night. It was listed as informational only on the agenda. It didn’t have to be approved.

Bonser was promoted to the position of director of Athletics and Activities in March, after Tom Toth, the former athletic director, resigned in February.

Before the promotion, Bonser was a health and physical education teacher at the middle school. His new position paid $84,000.

No explanation was given at the meeting as to why he resigned, and efforts to contact Bonser were unsuccessful.

In August, Bonser advocated to the school board for the improved version of the computer software HUDL. The version the school district was using was out-of-date, and the company said it would no longer be available.

The level of software closest to what the school district was using was going up in price by about $4,000, Bonser said. This meant that the new cost to stay status quo would be about $10,600 ($9,400 for the program plus $1,200 to have someone record the football games).

Bonser said his goal as athletic director was to help Pleasant Valley’s teams reach the top level of their division.

“We are one of two schools in all of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference - all 18 schools - that do not have this software,” Bonser said at school board meeting in August. “We are putting ourselves at a strategic disadvantage to not have this for all of our sports if we don’t advance.”

The improved software cost $13,000, but Bonser said the school district would be receiving a $2,000 refund from the EPC. He said this would bring the cost down to $11,000, which would be $400 more than status quo.
