Readers share their reasons for career contentment

In honor of Labor Day we asked readers why they like their jobs.

Here are a few of their replies:

Audra Doll

Tribe Pride Barbershop

Lehighton

I’ve been a barber for 13 years and still love every minute of it! My job is extremely busy everyday.

When I arrive at work most days, I’m always greeted by early birds.

I have the best co-worker, Charissa Gibson. I couldn’t do it without her. We have a great bond together.

Some of the best stories are in the barbershop. We hear the good, the bad and everything in between. We laugh, we cry and we cherish the bond that we have with our customers.

Some days are stressful, however, who doesn’t have stressful jobs? We are certainly not perfect, but we always strive for the best and appreciate each and every one of you that walk through the door.

Thank you all for supporting my barbershop.

Forever Treasured Photos

Andreas

Photography allows me to connect with the world around me. Life is filled with great moments such as a new baby, birthdays, weddings, graduations, and family reunions. Photography gives me the unique opportunity to capture an important day in someone’s life and give them the gift of freezing that moment in time, and make it last forever.

This is what makes photography special to me.

Not only is it a way to travel back in time, it gives the viewer a chance to share some of the action and feelings of this cherished time in one’s life.

I am a mom who is constantly taking photos of my children. My most valued experiences are being able to document a bond between children and their parents, as well as candids of the children being themselves.

Assistant Director

of Victory Valley Camp

I was assistant director of Victory Valley Camp, a Christian camp near Emmaus, for about 30 years. I was in charge of everything but maintenance and office work.

Some of my tasks I did was program development for Camp where kids stayed in cabins, Outpost where kids stayed in platform tents, day camp and for a while a trip camp for teens. I also was in charge of food service. The hiring and training of 50-60 staff and supervising all of what happened at camp was my job.

This position had many benefits. First was the peace that came from knowing this was exactly where God wanted me. He knows us so well; He knows what fits how He made us. He finds joy in seeing His children serve with a heart of gladness. There was joy because I worked with people: children, teens and adults. My skills in creative thought and problem solving greatly increased. Lastly, I built many lifetime friends.

Best of all, it was fabulous being part of God’s work. Seeing children and adults come to a saving relationship with God through Jesus Christ. And I watched and helped guide them in their relationship with God by learning and following His Word, the Bible.

Now I cook for Twin Pines in the Poconos and substitute in Palmerton schools.

Levina (Lovey) Irvin

Palmerton

St. Luke’s Carbon

The best job ever in my opinion is my volunteer job in the OR Waiting Room at the new St. Luke’s Carbon Campus. I’m an auxiliary member and volunteer of many many years giving of my time to the past Palmerton Hospital and now the St. Luke’s Carbon Campus. I try to give my best at all times.

The rewards from volunteering are absolutely priceless. I meet the most wonderful people Tuesdays and Fridays who tell me I bring sunshine into their cloudy days. I’m just being me, no “put-ons,” no “fake” just me being me. I feel like God has put me here for a reason. Smile and be nice to each other that’s what it’s all about. The cost of kindness is free and priceless and the rewards to your heart is great, again I have the best job ever! ??

Jessie Flickner

Youth Services Coordinator

Western Pocono Community Library

I truly have the best job ever. Some think of the library as a quiet place to check out books, which don’t get me wrong it is that too, but I want children and families to find adventure and excitement when they enter our library.

During any given day, I get to use silly voices like a Monster or Princess, sing a crazy song about chickens, dance around like a polar bear or swing like a monkey. I get to have children surround me with wide eyes as they listen to the stories whether I am dressed like a pirate going on an imaginary trip out to sea or a mouse talking about what happens if you give me a cookie.

On extra fun days, I get channel Ms. Frizzle and do exploding experiments in the side yard of the library or teach children to paint a dinosaur at sunset! I am fortunate that I get to inspire and engage children in the world around them while introducing them to a love of learning and the library! What could be a better job?

The Hyman Companies Inc.

New Tripoli

The Hyman Companies Inc. has about 30 retail jewelry stores around the country and many real estate Rental Apartments here in the Lehigh Valley.

I have been employed here for about 11 years. I have been working the last 40 years for three other companies and this is the best one. The company is more of a “family” than an employer. The owner is Nat Hyman and although he is a fierce businessman he is a compassionate person who truly cares about those who work for him.

Nat is flexible with the hours we work, which during the pandemic was a welcome relief. His office door is always open and you can bring him any business or personal problem you might have. If he cannot help you, he can recommend someone who can. This is a place where all the employees actually enjoy coming in to work with him. His loyalty to his employees is something rarely seen in today’s work environment. I cannot imagine working anywhere else.
