Suspect in custody after Jim Thorpe lockdown

Jim Thorpe Area School District and Carbon Career and Techincal Institute were under partial lockdown Wednesday after police received an unidentified threat.

Police reported they took a suspect into custody, but no charges have been filed.

The district planned to hold classes remotely on Thursday, and CCTI said they would announce their plans to parents Wednesday night.

School officials said they were alerted to the threat around 9 a.m., after students were arriving at school, from the Jim Thorpe Police Department. Police and school officials would not provide details, but Superintendent John Rushefski said it pertained to the entire school district.

“There never was a specific building, specific staff member or student that the threat was made upon,” Rushefski said.

The threat was investigated by Pennsylvania State Police. In a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, state troopers said that they learned of the threat Wednesday morning. They identified a suspect with assistance from the FBI.

Troopers arrested the suspect and took him to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Public Information Officer Anthony Petroski said the investigation is ongoing, and charges may be filed.

Petroski said that steps were taken to make sure the suspect does not have access to weapons.

Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joseph Schatz said he met with school administrators Wednesday morning, and decided together what lockdown procedures to put in place. The district closed all school buildings to visitors and canceled after-school activities, including athletics, SHINE, and any after school tutoring programs. Students were allowed to move from classroom to classroom.

“We made sure everyone was in the buildings, learning in the classroom,” Rushefski said.

Carbon Career Technical Institute Principal Brent Borzak notified parents that the school was under lockdown due to the threat, and that everyone was safe and accounted for. Dismissal was earlier than usual, at 2:05 p.m.

CCTI students who were scheduled to return to their home districts in the afternoon stayed until dismissal. Students scheduled to travel from their home districts for afternoon classes were directed to stay in their home districts.
