Concerns raised over noise and ATV use

Nesquehoning residents are concerned that their quiet town is becoming a location for out-of-county and out-of-state partying and off-roading that is getting out of hand.

Last week, residents asked borough council if anything could be done regarding mountain parties at the gun range on the Broad Mountain, where music is so loud it can be heard throughout the town at all hours of the night.

The incident happens sometimes a few times a week.

Council said that the land in question is state game lands and they have tried to address this problem in the past.

A letter regarding the issue will be sent to the state police and Pennsylvania Game Commission.

In addition, Tim Maurer, a resident of Park Avenue in the Hauto Valley Estates, asked if council had any plans to create an ordinance or enforce laws regarding ATVs on the streets.

“It’s getting bad up there again,” he said. “Just sit up there on a Sunday.”

He spoke about several out-of-state vehicles pulling trailers with multiple ATVs heading for private land off Industrial Road every weekend.

But the main problem is that these same vehicles then utilize Park Avenue as a driving road, when ATVs are not allowed on borough streets.

“I can’t imagine what the mountain looks like,” Maurer said.

He said that if it was the locals using the land like this, he wouldn’t have a problem, but it’s out-of-state residents who have no respect for the area they are coming into.

Gunshots can also be heard up the mountain on weekends in areas close to homes in this section of the borough.

“They’re not going to stop,” Maurer said, suggesting police do more patrols in this area on weekend evenings.

Council President David Hawk said that the borough can have police better enforce the laws on borough streets, but they do not have authority for any action on private lands.

He suggested the public safety committee discuss the matter to see if the borough can do anything more.
