Weatherly board hiring cleaning services for district

The Weatherly Area School Board combined their September meetings into one on Wednesday. Board members welcomed returning staff as the school year gets started.

A memorandum of understanding was approved between the Weatherly Area School District and the Weatherly Area Educational Support Personnel Association so that the administration can hire Enhancity cleaning services to provide up to four cleaners for the district, starting immediately, with the agreement term to the end of the year. Right now, the district is short four cleaners and four janitors.

Cooling units were bought and placed into the classrooms of the elementary school wing, which does not have a central air conditioning system. It was agreed to get a professional in to look at the wing and its cooling needs, and provide a report.

The delays in the paving project were discussed. Contractor Umbriac has promised to have the work complete by the end of this month, about three weeks later than contracted. Engineers from Brinkash, hired by the district, are monitoring the work on the days that Umbriac crews are working.

A plan for maintaining the cameras on the school buses is being worked out. Rohrer Bus Company representatives suggested that each unit be looked over monthly or more frequently.

In regular business, tenure was approved for Lori Davis, technology ed (STEM teacher); Krystal Singley, special education teacher; and Erica Towich, elementary teacher, as recommended by Superintendent Teresa L. Young. All have completed three successful years of teaching with satisfactory ratings, and the tenure will be effective June 2021.

The board approved Ryan Kately to be head Jr. High Cross Country Coach at a pay of $900, as well as Volleyball Assistant Coach Necarlly Serrata as a volunteer and Girls’ Basketball Assistant Coach Brandon Pugh, also as a volunteer (pending all clearances and paperwork).

Resignations of Melissa Shellock, full-time cleaning aide; and the resignation of Tyree Harris, part-time paraprofessional were also approved.

The board approved the first reading of updates to a number of policies.

The volunteers policy may get some additional changes.

In other business, the Weatherly Area School District assessment appeal report for 2021 was approved. Discussion pointed out there were a few properties whose values have dropped as they were resold, with the majority of local sales coming in higher than previous assessments.

The board approved the repository sale of two parcels, getting both back onto the tax rolls.
