Mahoning Twp. supervisors hear water concerns
Water concerns took up a good portion of Wednesday’s Mahoning Township board of supervisors meeting.
Mary Lou Harvan told the board she’s lived at her current address for 45 years, and has had to invest a lot of money.
Harvan said that on Sept. 1, she could not control the water during the heavy rains brought upon by Tropical Depression Ida.
To make matters worse, Harvan said she saw her neighbors divert their water onto her property. She then alluded to property restrictions, and referenced Pennsylvania Law.
Harvan said she asked her neighbor to move his pipe, but was met with resistance.
“It’s costing me money,” Harvan said. “I’m trying to do the right thing by law.”
Supervisor Myron “Zeke” Blahy told Harvan that in his opinion, it seems to be a civil matter.
Board Chairman Bruce Steigerwalt suggested that the township’s sewage enforcement officer should investigate the matter.
Also on Wednesday, Jack Smith told the board he’s getting excess water on his property on Mahoning Drive West.
“I’m getting excessive water from the project,” Smith said. “It’s been getting worse; each event is getting more serious.
“If the system is working, why are we getting all this water. If this system was (done) properly, this wouldn’t be happening.”
Smith said several of his neighbors have been affected as well.
“Somebody needs to investigate it,” he said. “It’s definitely here, and it’s getting worse.”
Steigerwalt said the board can have the township engineer investigate the matter.
Smith told the board they have been dealing with the issue for 15 years.
“I’ve been there 22 years,” he said. “It’s only getting worse.”
Steigerwalt reiterated that the best the township can do is have its engineer go out and look into the situation.
