Hay, farm equipment destroyed in barn fire

Hay and farm equipment were destroyed in a barn fire in West Penn Township Saturday.

A supervisor with the Schuylkill County Communications Center said the fire was called in at 8:21 p.m. The fire was at the Moyer farm just off Route 895 and Rabbit Run Road.

“It was already through the roof by the time we got there. It wasn’t safe to go in,” West Penn Township Fire Chief Jeff Bradford said.

Firefighters from Schuylkill, Carbon and Lehigh counties contained the blaze in two hours.

“We didn’t leave the scene until about 2:30 a.m.,” Bradford said.

The 60- by 100-foot barn contained 25 to 30% hay while the rest was farm equipment. Bradford didn’t know how many bales of hay were inside. However, two tractors, six hay wagons, a hay baler and hay tedder were. He said that is “quite a loss for a farmer.”

A damage estimate was not available.

A state police fire marshal was called to the scene but didn’t respond. Bradford said the cause of the fire is “still under investigation.”

He said the hot weather didn’t help conditions.

“I don’t suspect anything foul going on,” Bradford said.

Responding were fire departments from West Penn, Walker and East Penn townships along with New Ringgold, Hometown, Panther Valley Rapid Intervention Team, Mahoning Valley, Lehighton, Franklin Township, Nesquehoning and New Tripoli out of Lehigh County. The Penn Mahoning Ambulance was on scene.
