Driver flees police, crashes in Towamensing

A driver has been flown to the hospital after he led police on a 10-mile chase from Franklin Township to Towamensing Township, where he hit a tree.

State police said at 6:24 p.m., troopers from Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton Barracks attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 on Route 248 in Franklin Township due to vehicle code violations.

After activating the emergency lights and sirens, the truck failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated. During the course of the pursuit, the driver, a 20-year-old male, committed numerous vehicle code violations.

Ultimately, the fleeing vehicle lost control, left the roadway, and struck a tree.

The driver had serious injuries and was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

State police said the investigation remains active.
