Two people were seriously injured Monday night when involved in a violent head-on crash in West Penn Township.

The crash occurred at 11:24 p.m. in front of 835 Penn Drive, Route 443 involving a car and a sport utility vehicle. Firefighters from West Penn and Mahoning Valley worked to extricate the injured from the wreckage.

Two medical transport helicopters were flown to the scene but due to the severity of the injuries of one patient, that victim was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital trauma center, Carbon campus.

Area fire police maintained traffic control at the scene shutting down the roadway.

West Penn Township police are investigating the incident.
