Towamensing discusses short-term rentals

Concerns over short-term rentals continue to abound in Towamensing Township.

Several residents asked Towamensing Township supervisors last week for updates on the situation.

Mike Harris wanted an update on a short-term rental in the township because it is being conducted illegally, and is not allowed in the zoning district that it’s at.

Harris said the property is up for sale and supposedly under contract, and he wanted to know who is responsible to tell the new buyers that the property is not allowed to be a short-term rental.

It was stated that a hearing is scheduled on the matter for 2 p.m. April 19 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.

Harris said his concern was that there’s not full disclosure of what’s going on, and if this continues, they’ll all find themselves back another year from now.

Resident Kevin Christman inquired about the status of a different illegal short-term rental.

Christman said that activity is starting to pick up, and there’s a lot of noise.

Board Chairman Guy Seifert told Christman that it’s a process.

Seifert said it’s important for residents to bring these matters to the township’s attention.

In September, the supervisors unanimously agreed to advertise an ordinance prohibiting short-term rentals, transient rentals and Airbnbs.

The ordinance was adopted at the October meeting, but several members of the community said at that time the ordinance hadn’t made a difference in the short-term rentals.
