Carbon seeks funds to replace courthouse elevator

Carbon County is applying for funds to replace the main elevator in the county courthouse through a state program that is the result of two state facilities closing.

On Thursday, the board ratified an application submission for assistance under the State Facility Closure Transition Program in the amount of $138,000.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said this is due to the closures of SCI Retreat and the White Haven Center.

Carbon County has 39 residents who will be affected by the closures, Nothstein said.

According to the grant website, “The (program) is intended to ensure adequate community support following the closure of commonwealth facilities in directly impacted and contiguous counties.”

Grants are based on per capita and countywide needs.

The main elevator in the courthouse is aging and has been the main access for courtrooms 1 and 2 for decades.

In 2014, it broke down and costs to repair it came in at $22,684.

Nothstein said that he hopes to have the project completed by the end of the year.

In a related matter, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that through discussions with the workforce development director and CareerLink, both of those agencies will be prepared to provide essential services to those affected by the two facility closures.
