5 injured when vehicle hits parked railroad car

Three people were seriously injured Monday night when involved in a crash in West Mahanoy township.

The crash occurred at 6:58 p.m. at Mount Olive and Colorado roads when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve in the roadway mounting a set of railroad tracks impacting with a parked railroad car. The force of the impact was so great the Dodge sedan derailed the car.

Three victims were treated by five medic units before being flown from the scene, one to Geisinger Trauma center in Danville and two to the Lehigh Valley Hospital trauma center in Allentown.

Two additional victims were treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to an area trauma center.

West Mahanoy and the Reading and Blue Mountain railroad police are investigating the incident.
