Fishing season opens Saturday

Anglers will take to waterways on both sides of the Blue Mountain Saturday morning for the opening of trout season.

For the second straight year, the season will open the same day in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania. The official beginning of the season is Saturday at 8 a.m.

Opening the season in all counties on the same day is aimed at reducing overcrowding on popular streams, travel by anglers, and providing an additional two weeks of fishing for much of the state, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

PFBC plans to stock a total of 3,194,200 adult brook, brown and rainbow trout in lakes and streams across the state this year, with an average size of 11 inches. Rainbows make up over half of the stocked fish.

Around 13,000 golden rainbow trout will be stocked around the state.

They estimate an additional million will be stocked by cooperative nurseries.

During the weeks leading up to the opening of trout season, PFBC stocked trout in 15 waterways in Carbon County: the Aquashicola, Buckwha, Drakes, Lizard, Mahoning, Mauch Chunk, Nesquehoning and Pohopoco Creeks; Sand Spring, Mud and Hickory Runs; Hickory Run Lake, the Lehigh Canal, and the Lehigh River.

Schuylkill County waterways stocked in recent weeks include Rabbit Run Reservoir, the Mahoning Lizard and Locust Creeks, Locust Lake and the Little Schuylkill River.

The Buckwha, Princess Run and McMichael creeks are among those stocked in Monroe County.

A full schedule of trout stocking is available at fishandboat.com.

Unlike in past years, volunteers will not be permitted to walk up and assist with stocking trout.

A fishing license and trout stamp are required for all anglers age 16 and older. Fishing licenses are available at huntfish.pa.gov, the FishBoatPA mobile app, and at 700 license issuing agents across the state.
