Wednesday update: Pa. reports over 5,900 cases

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed Wednesday that there were 5,984 additional positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 783,170.

There are 4,593 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 918 patients are in the intensive care unit with COVID-19. Most of the patients hospitalized are ages 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older.

As of 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, there were 401 new deaths reported for a total of 19,868 deaths attributed to COVID-19. Seventy-eight percent of the deaths occurred over the past 10 days, the remainder of deaths reported today occurred in late December and early January.

There are 3,507,092 individuals who have tested negative to date.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 60,319 resident cases of COVID-19, and 11,267 cases among employees, for a total of 71,586 at 1,523 distinct facilities in all 67 counties. Out of the total number of deaths, 10,112 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities.

Through Jan. 19, 516,746 does of the vaccine have been administered.

Local numbers

• Carbon County added 54 new cases for a total of 3,992. There are 110 deaths, one more since Tuesday.

• Lehigh County has 25,940 cases, an increase of 182, with 19 more deaths for a total of 631.

• Luzerne County has 21,042 cases, an increase of 163. There were five more deaths, bringing the total to 552.

• In Monroe County, there are 62 new cases since Tuesday for a total of 7,882. Deaths remain at 232.

• In Northampton County, there are 205 additional cases, for a total of 21,157. There were 16 more deaths for a total of 527.

• Schuylkill County reported 10,418 cases, an increase of 57. Five more deaths were reported for a total of 305.
