Schuylkill reports prison is COVID-free

The Schuylkill County Prison is free of the virus that has caused so much death and heartache worldwide.

Schuylkill County Prison Warden David Wapinsky shared the news Wednesday at the prison board meeting.

“As for the month of September, we are again COVID free,” Wapinsky told the board.

Asked before the meeting if there were any cases of the virus at the prison, he said no.

Wapinsky also provided population counts at the prison. He said Wednesday there were 248 inmates, 204 male and 44 females were at the prison.

“We are triple celling. We had 23 inmates triple celled this morning,” Wapinsky said.

The peak inmate count for September was 238, the low was 195. The highest female inmate count was 47. On average, 33 inmates were sent to other facilities, Wapinsky said. As of Wednesday, 30 inmates were housed at other facilities. Of those, 15 were in Centre County, six in Columbia County and nine in Northumberland County.

Work release and prerelease programs were still suspended for September because of the virus.

Several personnel actions were mentioned. Three correctional officers have resigned: Kayla Nitolo, Eric Ross and Virginia Medina. Ross and Medina accepted positions elsewhere. A reason for Nitolo’s resignation was not provided.

The board voted to hire Alberto Ruiz as a part-time correctional officer.
