Polk to have traffic lights inspected

This past Monday night the discussion at the Polk Township supervisors’ meeting turned to the subject of two intersections and the traffic signals at the intersection that are in need of repair.

“We have taken several calls about one light,” said Rebecca Tippett, township secretary.

During the discussion everyone agreed the lights were certainly old, but just how old was not something anyone was sure of.

The consensus of the people in the gallery was that most people don’t think too much about the traffic lights they pass through during their travels every day. Other than the color of the light, or if the light is out of order and holds them up.

“Traffic lights need yearly maintenance and inspections to make sure they are safe and working properly,” said Ron Young spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

He said that is especially true of the newer, more sophisticated signals that are centrally controlled by monitors or by computers to allow them to be coordinated in real time to deal with changing traffic patterns. Video cameras or sensors buried in the pavement are used to monitor traffic patterns across a city.

A motion was made to contact Kuharchik Construction Inc. in Exeter to send Polk Township a proposal to inspect the traffic signals at two intersections, Route 534 and Route 209 and Route 209 and Burger Hollow Road. If the proposal is signed, the cost would be $700 per intersection.
